Seppa Dominates 2011-12 Senior Masters

Dan Seppa led wire to wire at the third annual Madison USBC Bowling Association Senior Masters on Saturday, October 19 at Spartan Bowl in McFarland, and capped it off with a 201-160 victory over Herb Kimpel in the title match.

This year, 40 of our associations top bowlers 50 and older competed for a record prize fund of $2,155.00 - including $1,450.00 from tournament sponsors.

Seppa led qualifying by 112 pins over the next qualifier, with games of 234, 225, 222, 245, 250, and 224 - on a day when 200 was very good and not very common.

The 2011 event was conducted on USBC Blue Pattern #3, the highest volume and shortest of the Blue patterns.

Senior Masters Champion
Bob Holzbauer

Bob Holzbauer prevailed over Dave Shaw in the final stepladder match of the 2010 MBA Senior Masters tournament on Sunday, November 7. The contest was held on the tough USBC Blue #1 condition and required quality shot-making all day.

This year's tournament attracted 42 competitors - up from a dismal 19 the previous year, all of whom were on hand again. The minimum age was lowered to 50, from 55, but only 10 of the 42 entrants were under 55. The lowered entry fee of $40.00, combined with the generous $1250 in sponsors and a 1:3 payout ratio was a significant factor in the increased participation.

The cut to cash for the tournament was +4. All bowlers who were plus cashed.

Inaugural MBA Senior Masters in the Books

Not to be outdone by the 10th frame drama of the inaugural MBA "Regular" Masters, the first Senior Masters provided plenty of its own.

The tournament drew only 19 competitors but that took nothing away from the competition. The event was contested on a challenging condition, the Kegel Middle Road pattern. This pattern kept typical runaway league scoring in check, and provided a fair condition.

The first round cut for the top five bowlers was +55 and ended with a tie for the fifth spot. A 9th and 10th frame roll-off was conducted between Mark Recknagel and Dave Shaw. Recknagel began the roll-off with a spare, Shaw followed with a strike. In the tenth, Recknagel filled the first two strikes, then a nine count for a 49 - forcing Shaw to double in his 10th to advance. Shaw threw three strikes and won the roll-off 60-49.
