2011 Champion: Chris Gibbons
2011 Masters Results
The third annual MBA Masters, held on February 5, 2011, attracted a record field of 51 bowlers. The event entry fee was decreased to $40, from $55, and the payout ratio was increased to 1:3 from 1:4. Thanks to the hard work of MBA Hall of Famer, Director, and Promotions Committee Chair Bob Holzbauer, the prize fund for the event was the highest ever - in excess of $3500.
Congratulations to tournament champion Chris Gibbons for the victory. Gibbons won $716 and earns passes the to Hall of Fame and Bowler Recognition Dinner and the Dinner with the Champions.
2011 Masters
The 2011 Masters will be held February 5 at Schwoegler's Entertainment Center. Check-in time will be 11:30 a.m., bowling will start at 12:30.
There are a number of changes this year:
Format
This year the tournament will be a six game qualifier, followed by a five person stepladder final. The MBA Tournament Committee recommended a change to an eight game qualifier over 16 lanes. The board split the vote on the change (versus keeping the format the same) so it was not adopted. The board did pass a five person stepladder finals proposal.
A few problems exist with the committee recommendation, namely time constraints in the event of anything more than 40 entries. Looking forward to future tournaments, it could not be held in any 16 lanes center - effectively eliminating any opportunity for most of our suburban centers to host the event.
Association Manager and tournament director Bill Dennis offered the six game qualifier as a compromise between the two, especially given the success of the Senior Masters which this format mirrors.
Sponsorship
The board was also asked to approve a $1500 sponsor allocation to the Masters. MBA Director Bob Holzbauer had already procured $700 in sponsor exclusively for the tournament, so an additional $800 was approved for the tournament.
Entry Fee / Prize Ratio
With the sponsorship, the board voted to reduce the entry fee to $40 and increase the payout ration to 1:3. The decision to go with a six game qualifier versus an eight game qualifier helped to make this a better possibility since two additional games carves $5.50 per entry out of the prize fund.
All other aspects of the Masters tournament remain the same. The USBC Nationals dress code policy will be in place. The tournament will be held on a USBC Blue condition. This tournament is the premiere singles event in the area with a prize fund of over $2800 with 64 entries. The format, entry fee, and payout ratio should help to attract more bowlers if it goes the same way as the Senior Masters.
2010 MBA Masters
The 2009-10 MBA Masters tournament was held on February 6, 2010 at Bowling Green Rec Center, host of the 2009-10 City Tournament Minor Events.
Congratulations to MBA Hall of Fame member Kevin Thompson for his victory in the tournament. Full tournament results are here.
