Bowler Certification and House League Management with BLS Software
By Mike Brown, League Secretary
Does the league (or leagues) that you are the secretary of, use the house computer system, whereby they do the work?
Does the house use the CDE Software BLS2010 program?
If you answered yes to both of the questions, are you verifying sanctioning information with the house? Even if the house is using the treasurer portion of the BLS2010 software, whereby the sanctioning certification should be set automatically when the bowler information is updated with sanction fee payment. You still need to audit the information in their system to make sure that it is correct. As you well know, Bill Dennis sends back to you a list of all the bowlers that are known to be sanctioned in the MBA database. What you don't know is if the house matches that list.
The first step in the verification process is to make sure that the house has BLS2010 set up correctly to keep track of sanctioned bowlers. If you never let the house know when you get a membership application, the house probably just sets the option to blanket sanction all of the league bowlers.
Well, that causes a problem in that a non-sanctioned bowler might achieve an award score and the system will report that the bowler gets an award.
So, to repair this situation, you need to sit down with the person at the house that is doing the work and get your league's sanctioning information up-to-date. We will be assuming that the house is not using the treasurer portion of the BLS2010 software (does anyone?). Start the software and go into your league. Select menu option G-1 (Menu G, option 1). The top two switches must be set to NO. Now you will have control of indicating which bowlers have been sanctioned, or not.
The next step will be the most time consuming. This is where you set the switch for those bowlers who are sanctioned. Select menu G-2. You will see a list of all the teams. Selecting a team will display the team members.
If your league has subs, they will show up at the bottom in the Not on a Team tab. Go through the list that Dennis sent you and select each bowler.
Flip the sanction switch. The switch pertaining to sanctioning in your league or other, is not real important. But, you can set this switch if you know for sure (the info should be on the report from Bill).
Once you have set all of the switches for the sanctioned bowlers, print the report that lists all of the league sanctioned and non-sanctioned bowlers.
Do this by selecting menu G-6. Compare that list to the MBA sanctioned list to make sure that nothing was missed, or set incorrectly. From this list you can determine who has not submitted a membership application form.
Keep the house up-to-date every time you get a membership application.
Have the house print the certification list whenever you get an updated MBA sanction report from Bill.
Verify the lists.
If the house is using the treasurer portion of BLS2010, have them print the certification report (menu G-6). Compare their list to your MBA list.
As a side note, make sure that the names in the house system are the bowler's legal name. Not nicknames. A final average report can be generated by BLS at the end of the year that Bill can read in directly. But the names have to match. If the bowler wants a nickname to display on the overhead, put the nickname in the nickname field of the bowler's database record and set the export to the front desk to include nicknames.
A word of caution.
The bowler's last name will always be sent to the consoles. There is nothing that can be done about that. I've gone round and round with CDE Software regarding that issue. The owner of CDE Software thinks we are nuts if the last name is not included/displayed on the console. So, if a bowler with a nickname complains that his last name is also displayed, let them know that is the way the software was written and it won't get changed.
Next up, configuring BLS2010 to print a press report of high scores that Madison Newspapers wants. Not what BLS2010 thinks that a press report should look like. Once configured, this report is available to all leagues managed by the house.
If you have a BLS2010 question, let Bill Dennis know and he will get it to me. I'll do my best to answer it, or get an answer from the CDESoftware forum.
