2009-2010 City Tournament

This weekend kicks off the first shifts of the 2009-10 MBA Championship Tournament (City Tournament). Middleton Sport Bowl will host the team event weekends through February 14.

Entries are accepted throughout the tournament - up to the Wednesday of each week for the next weekend shift. The Team event is only $20.00 per bowler - so bring down your team and compete for an MBA title.

Bowling Green Recreation Center in Middleton will host the Minor Events, beginning January 23.

The League Challenge will be in place again this year, offering a separate $1,000.00 in prize money for leagues who send teams to the city tournament. The prize money is paid to the top seven League Challenge teams over average. All MBA leagues are eligible to participate - including couples leagues. Your league team can cash in the city tournament and win up to $1,000.00 for your league! Follow the link below for more information.

All MBA member proprietors have been invited to sponsor a team in the tournament as part of a Proprietor Cup challenge. The highest team over average will earn a permanent trophy for the sponsoring center and have their team name added to a traveling plaque.

So far, Viking Lanes has accepted the Proprietor Challenge and (the following may not be completely true) was overheard saying that other centers might as well not even try because Viking Lanes dominates, plain and simple.

1976 State Champions

1976 State Tournament Champions

MBA Hall of Fame member Dick Pedracine recently sent in this picture from his archives.

The depiction is members of the 1976 State Tournament championship team. The caption reads:

Park Towne Pro Shop has brought Madison its first men's state bowling tournament team championship in years. The above pictured bowlers won the Regular Division net title with 2974. Left to right are: Front - Larry Nissen, Ollie Wheeler and Bill Schwoegler; Back row - Dick Pedracine, sponsor Jess Parizo, and Jim Corcoran.

Schwoegler (1991), Pedracine (1993), Parizo (2002), and Corcoran (1995) are all MBA Hall of Fame Members. Nissen (1990) and Wheeler (1993) are in the MBA Legion of Honor.

Thanks for the blast from the past, Pedder.

Bowl For The Cure

Bowl for the Cure

The donations are coming in for the MBA's first Bowl for the Cure event in February. The State Bank of Cross Plains sent in a $250.00 donation, and the MBA has received gift donations from Marriott Madison West, Marriott Courtyard Madison East, the Sheraton, and Holiday Inn City Centre Green Bay.

The gift donations will be offered for raffle or silent auction. The Holiday Inn donation is a three day, two night Get-A-Way package that includes dinner for two AND a Sunday champagne brunch! The Milwaukee Bucks recently donated a certificate good for two tickets to a 2009-10 season game.

Would you or your company like to help with a cash donation, gift donation, or team entry? Call the MBA at 221.0300.

The event will be on February 27, 2009. We will bowl three games - one regular, one nine-pin tap, and one eight-pin tap.

Participation packets have been distributed to MBA bowling centers and leagues. If you are interested in participating as a team or individual contact your league secretary, center manager, or the MBA for more information.

League Officer Sweeper

League officers redeemed themselves in the 2009-10 League Officer Sweeper at Bowling Green on November 15. Last year, the top cash positions were dominated by MBA Directors. MBA Director and Hall of Fame member Mark Habich was the 2008-09 winner and looked forward to defending his title. Alas, directors were practically nowhere to be found in the upper standings this year.

Topping the field of 37 entries was Mike Lien, President of the Big Eight League at Bowling Green. The 183 average Lien fired a 682 scratch series on 235, 214, and 233 to win the first place check of $50.00.

2009-2010 Senior Masters

Scott Lacoursiere

Not to be outdone by the 10th frame drama of the inaugural MBA "Regular" Masters, the first Senior Masters provided plenty of its own.

The tournament drew only 19 competitors but that took nothing away from the competition. The event was contested on a challenging condition, the Kegel Middle Road pattern. This pattern kept typical runaway league scoring in check, and provided a fair condition.

The first round cut for the top five bowlers was +55 and ended with a tie for the fifth spot. A 9th and 10th frame roll-off was conducted between Mark Recknagel and Dave Shaw.
