And welcome new bowlers, too. The 2009-10 season is pretty much underway. We hope you find success on the lanes this season.

The Madison USBC Bowling Association is your local membership services organization. The MBA processes your memberships and award applications, administers your local Hall of Fame, and conducts local championship tournaments including the MBA Association Championships, Senior Association Championships, MBA Masters, and the new Senior Masters.

This season we will be looking to expand our role and offer average based singles tournaments, charity fund-raising events, and other new competitive opportunities.

Leighton Team Spans 3 Generations

While processing membership applications, a number of surnames are common to some areas of the association, from the Laufenbergs of Waunakee, the Swensons of Stoughton, to the Breunigs of just about everywhere else.

But recently, a spate of Leightons came in from the Groundhog League in Sun Prairie. My curiosity was soon answered in an email from Diana Leighton.

"I am sending some pictures of my dad's 3 generation team that bowls this year at Prairie Lanes on Thursday nights at 6:30. My dad is thrilled to be bowling all together with both his sons and both his grandsons. How may sports can have a 3-generation team compete at the same level? That is something I think very unique to the sport of bowling."

It truly is a rarity. The dad she refers to is none other than MBA Hall of Fame member Phil "Whiz Kid" Leighton.

Pictured, left to right, are grandson Derek Leighton, son Don Leighton, the "Whiz Kid", son Duane Leighton, and grandson Craig Pounders.
