Richardson Wins Inaugural Masters
The first Madison USBC Bowling Association Masters Tournament was conducted January 11 at Rude's Lanes - host of the team event of the 2009 MBA Association Championship Tournament.
There was a good turnout of 46 bowlers for this first event. The competitors bowled four games of qualifying on a condition that turned out to be much easier than planned.
After four games, the top 11 scores advanced to a second round. It took +136 to advance - a 234 average. The top 11 bowled two more games to jockey for cash positions, and seeds in the stepladder finals. The high scoring pace continued, fourth place was +244 - a 244 average.
Richardson, the third high qualifier, bowled against Rick Thomas in the first match. Richardson defeated Thomas 265-247
In the second match, Richardson met Rob Bailey. Bailey's day was highlighted by three honor scores (the only three in the tournament) - 2 300 games and a 299. Undaunted, Richardson continued his high scoring day with a 237-189 victory.
Advancing to the title match, Richardson was slated to bowl tournament leader Ken Duffield. Duffield led the event through all of qualifying, ending up a +318 after six games - nearly a 253 average.
The title match was comparitively low scoring. Richardson began the match with a 3-10 split conversion, a double and a 9 spare. Duffield opened with strike, spare, strike, spare. Then, disaster struck for Richardson who left back to back big splits. Duffield could not get a run going to close out the match and posted a spare in the ninth frame. After Richardson ran the last four strikes for a 200 game, Duffield needed only a mark for the title. In the only shot that ran high for him over the entire day, a 4-9 split was the result of his effort. Duffield could not convert the split and ended up with 195.
For the win, Richardson took home $372.00 plus the Masters Eagle trophy. Richardson also earns passes to the annual MBA Hall of Fame and Bowler Recognition Dinner and the annual Dinner With the Champions.
Duffield won $232.50; Bailey $186.00; Thomas $139.50.
Other cashers: Chris Gibbons $80.00 Bob Holzbauer $75.00 Matt Ruhland $70.00 Bill Dennis $65.00 Jeff Barsness $60.00 Don Dudley $55.00 Jeff Sweeney $50.00
Tournament checks will be issued, and full tournament details will be published on the MBA website shortly.

City Tournament Questions
I received a call at the bowling office recently from a lady in a couples league, inquiring about the city tournament. The call was generated by interest in the League Challenge. She was considering entering a mixed team into the event.
I had not considered that the female members of mixed leagues (who are typically members of the Madison Women's Bowling Association) may also be interested in the MBA city tournament.
Here are the answers to questions about eligibility:
YES! Female members of mixed leagues (couples or otherwise) are eligible for the City Tournament, provided they meet the other eligibility requirements - 9 games bowled in an MBA league. Mixed leagues fall under the jurisdiction of both the MBA and the MWBA.
However, females must purchase a membership in the MBA to participate in the City Tournament. The cost is $10.00 for the local membership, if they are already USBC members.
For clarity, the MWBA is a women's only organization. The MBA is an open organization not a "men's" organization. Leagues, on the other hand, can be women's, men's, or mixed.
There are a number of female bowlers who are members of the MBA already, typically those who bowl in men's leagues. Others are those who participate in the WSBA state tournament, and either purchase standard $20.00 memberships or MBA $10.00 Local memberships (in addition to their MWBA membership) through their mixed league.

Ask the Pro Shop
Dear Pro Shop, What is the benefit of a finger tip grip?
Pro Shop Answer, The short answer is comfort.
You won't "lose" the ball in your back swing. Nor will it "hurt" your scores to make the switch at any age or experience level of your game.
If anything you will have the opportunity to "hook" the ball a little more.
This is why you might consider making the "comfort" change.
Did you know the finger tip was originally called the "Schwoegler grip"? Connie Schwoegler, MBA Hall of Fame member and 2 time World Champion discovered the fit back in 1949, and patented the grip.
As the story was told by Bill Schwoegler, back in 1948 Connie had won one world championship - at the time using just two digits to bowl, the middle finger and the thumb.
Is was the norm to use just two in 1942. These guys were iron men and women. Bowling lots of games to win victories, but experiencing lots of pains.
After that year no one can lay credit to the claim of switching to a three finger grip, but at the next couple of world championships it seemed that everyone switched to what we refer to now as the conventional grip.
Connie finished well in '48 but had great discomfort in his hand. This pro shop guy can remember sitting at Nakoma while sipping orange soda and eating popcorn while Mr. Schwoegler talked about the "Schwoegler Grip".
As the story goes, Connie was sitting in the pro shop putting his fingers in the "fitting" ball and looked down to see his "tips" of his fingers just in the holes.
He drilled up a ball this way, won the next world championship, and the pain wasn't there.
So, visit your local pro shop and ask for the "Schwoegler" or the finger tip grip.
