City Tournament
Entry forms are in nearly every center now, and also online here.
This years tournament features a League Challenge. Enter a team (or more) from your league and you could - in addition to cashing on the regular tournament prize list - win one of several cash prizes for your league! There is $1,000.00 up for grabs in seven tournament bounties. The winners are determined by the teams that bowl highest over average. Check out the League Challenge Information flyer for details.
The MBA is also running a Masters tournament on January 11 at Rude's Lanes - host of the 2008-09 City Tournament team event. Competitors will bowl four games of qualifying, then cut to the top 1/4 of the field. Those advancing will bowl two more games and the top four based on six game totals will advance to a stepladder finals to determine the champion.
The winner will earn a city title and passes to the annual Hall of Fame and Bowler Recognition Dinner in August, and Dinner With the Champions in September.
Reserve your dates early!

Leary Receives Historic Award
Madison Bowling Association President Charlie Reithmeyer joined Black Earth Lanes owners Larry and Nancy Kahl to present Bob Leary with his 300 game ring last Wednesday. The 300 game had historic significance as the first certified perfect game at Black Earth Lanes.

Sun Prairie Bowlers Recognized
Madison Bowling Association Director and Hall of Fame member Greg Stauffacher stopped by Prairie Lanes to present USBC awards to bowlers in the Top Notch League and the Monday Major League.
Brandon Klosky of the Top Notch League received his 11 in a row plaque for a 296 game last season - accompanied by a "chorus of support" from his teammates.
Brian Benisch was recognized for his first career 300 game, bowled in the Monday Major League. Prior to that perfect game, Benisch also recorded an 11 in a row, 290 effort.
Congratulations to both of these bowlers on their accomplishments.

Ask the Pro Shop
Dear Pro Shop, I am thinking of dropping weight on my next ball purchase. Will this effect my scoring or pin carry?
Pro Shop Answer, It depends on the current weight you are now using. I had a conversation with a local hall of famer who drilled equipment for a lady in the 70's who bowled 700's with a 9 pound ball.
However, if you look at pin carry mathematically, we need to stay at 13 pound equipment and above for zero deflection. Your ball only touches 4 pins in a perfect strike, we count on a domino effect for the rest of the pins to fall.
I like the idea of dropping a little weight in the ball. As a coach, I see bowlers keeping their hands behind the ball longer in lighter weights.
When the Masters was in Milwaukee a couple of years ago, I had the chance to hang out on the PBA truck. PBA Bowler Pete Weber brought in a ball for some surface work. It weighed in below 14 pounds. If these guys can win tournaments with a lighter weight, you can drop down too.

Rolling Out
By MBA Past-President, Jerry Wilson
The International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in St. Louis is no more. Like Greendale's USBC National Headquarters has already done, it has closed it doors, is packing its bags, and heading to Arlington, Texas. November 8th was the last day to visit this tribute to bowling located near Busch Stadium, not far from the Gateway Arch and the Mississippi River. My wife and I took one last opportunity to visit the Museum and Hall of Fame before it closed. We spent hours viewing the exhibits. I read about many historic events and happenings in bowling's past. There seems to be no end to bowling's history in cities and towns throughout the Midwest. Everywhere I looked I saw Milwaukee, St. Louis, Detroit, Madison, St. Paul, and other Mid-west locations. Funny, I saw very little mention of cities and towns in Texas.
Enough complaining on my part, the Museum and Hall of Fame (HOF) is being packed up for the move. They plan to open their new doors in February 2009 and I am confident that displays will be improved. Anyone getting a chance to visit the new Museum and HOF should go. The history of bowling is traced from ancient times, through the formation of the American Bowling Congress in 1895 in New York, the Women's International Bowling Congress in 1905 in St. Louis, and the formation of national youth organizations, with displays up until the present. Additions continue to be incorporated, most recently tributes to 2008 USBC HOF inductees were added.
