TCT Bowling Blog Online

If we can't get ink, at least we can now get electrons.

The Capital Times unveiled a new feature of its online news 'paper' on September 2 - an online bowling blog written by MBA Hall of Fame member Jeff Richgels.

Richgels got his start with The Capital Times in 1980 when he was a hotshot young bowler and a freshman at UW-Madison and the newspaper was seeking a bowling columnist. A one-column tryout led to a life-long relationship with The Capital Times that included working as a sports stringer in the 1980s.

After graduating from UW-Madison with a journalism degree in 1985, Richgels joined the Pro Bowlers Association in 1986 and spent 1987 and 1988 competing full-time on the PBA Tour before wrist injuries ended that career.

Richgels began working full-time for The Capital Times in 1990. He has covered general news, police and courts, county government and business with a specialty in technology, and is now Tech Life reporter for the paper's 77 Square publication.

The Madison native, who is a member of the Madison Bowling Association Hall of Fame and on the ballot for the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame, returns to his journalistic roots with this bowling blog.

Richgels reports that he will "focus on accomplishments of local bowlers in local leagues and tournaments, but also will report on bowling news of general interest."

Visit The Capital Times bowling blog (don't forget to bookmark it) at the link below. If you have something to report, the link to Jeff's email can be found on the blog site.

Many thanks to TCT and to Jeff for taking the time and effort to recognize and report on the accomplishments of the area's more than 12,000 organized bowlers.

Traveling League Looking For Youth Bowlers

Traveling league bowls every Sunday at 11:00 am at the Madison area bowling centers. We are done by 1 pm at the latest. Sometimes we do have double shifts which start at 9:30 am. There are 4 bowlers on a team, but single bowlers are encouraged to join, and we will put teams together.

Our sign-up or organizational meeting is Sunday Sept 7th at Village Lanes at 11:00 am. Each bowler is allowed to bowl 2 free games if they so desire. We can add bowlers and teams up to 3 weeks after sign-up, and we can also add teams after the Christmas break. We always need subs each week.

Our first session is Sunday Sept 14th at 11:00 am at Village Lanes. Bowling was $6.00 per 3 games last year.

Any help we can obtain from our high school coaches by informing all of your bowlers of the above information would be greatly appreciated.

Certify Your Tournament Online

USBC's optional online tournament certification program proved so successful this past season that USBC now requires all tournament managers to certify their events this way. The system allows faster turnaround time while allowing technology to save paper and help the environment.

The process initially takes about 30 minutes to complete and can be done at any time. Those who registered online last season, and submitted all required reports, have the ability to renew the same event online this season. Go to the tournament certification link under "Departments" on bowl.com. Log in under your user ID and password and click "renew." You can then review and update the center(s), tournament date(s) plus make any changes to the rules previously selected.

Within 30 days of the tournament's completion the required financial report can be submitted online; however, the prize list must be e-mailed, faxed or mailed to Tournament Certifications per Rule 309. In the future, the prize list also will be able to be submitted online.

Anyone needing assistance using the new online tournament certification program can call (800) 514-BOWL, ext. 3157 or e-mail tournamentcert@bowl.com.
