E-News Reformatted
The Madison USBC BA E-Newsletter has been reformatted in an effort to be more viewer friendly across the many different email clients used - Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.
While the code used to write the newsletter is compliant with web standards, some email clients are light years behind web browsers when it comes to translating the code. Please let me know if the newsletter comes to you unreadable or "looks funny".
And - don't forget - we would be happy to include your bowling news story in the newsletter. Use the MBA E-News to congratulate your league bowlers, promote your certified tournament, or spread other appropriate bowling news.

Smith Family Breathes Life into 'Breath of Life'
by Skip Smith
Bowling has been a great fund raiser in this area for sometime. My wife and I were involved years ago by hosting a yearly event at Village Lanes in Monona. We held the event in 1990-1996 and raised approximately $20,000.00 dollars. All proceeds went to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Marc McDowell was honorary chairman and "CF Breath of Life" recipient. Our son, MBA member Nathaniel Smith, who just made the 300 score list has CF. This disease is inherited and life expectancy when Nate was born was 12. Nate will be 30 this April and has done very well.
The CF bowling fundraiser is now hosted by Andy Detinger and family from the Lodi area. Before the Lodi Bowl closed, it was hosted there. Since then the event has been held at the Waun-A-Bowl and this year at Rude's Lanes in De Forest. They have had an enormous backing from the surrounding communities and on average have raised between $10,000 and $20,000 per year. This event has been going on since 2005.

Association Championships Perfection
The Madison USBC BA Association Championship tournaments move into the last weekend of competition. Three more bowlers have rolled perfect games in the Association Championships, and the doubles scratch record was demolished by a couple of Hall of Fame members.
Hagstrom, Erstad, and Loret 300 Games
Howard Loret, Jeff Erstad, and Ed Hagstrom each fired perfect games in the Regular Championship tournament - all three in the doubles event, on the same shift, and in different games.
First up was Ed Hagstrom on lanes 15 and 16, representing the Wisconsin Telephone League at Badger Bowl. Ed's first twelve strikes were followed by many more, as he posted a 761 effort in doubles. The Hagstrom Insurance team bowls this weekend, where Ed looks to complete an outstanding tournament.
Jeff Erstad also threw his perfecto on the red hot 15 and 16 - the site of three of the four 300's in the tournament. He coupled his 757 series with partner Bill Burns 652 for a 1490 doubles total with handicap, currently 6th in Division 1 Doubles. Incidentally, another Erstad, Jeff's father Errol, is currently leading the All Events 65-69 Division in the Senior Championship tournament.
And finally, Howard Loret, also of the Wisconsin Telephone League, partnered with son Chris and completed a 712 series with his 300 game. Chris had the first 10 strikes himself in one game of his 673 doubles effort. The Loret team total of 1598 with handicap is currently leading Division 2 Doubles. This was the 180 average Loret's first 300 in 30 years - "since junior leagues!"

Hall of Famers Smash Doubles Record
Madison USBC BA Hall of Famers Rob Bailey and Bill Leidich team up and crush the doubles scratch record of 1497, previously held by fellow Hall member Greg Stauffacher and Chris Huff.
The duo nearly mirrored each others games in true team fashion. Bailey, owner of MBA tournament sponsor Rob Bailey's Pro Shop and Lanes, strung together games of 246, 247, and 269 for a 762 total. Leidich threw games of 245, 277, and 247 for a 769 set. The 1531 total is a new MBA doubles record and the 1597 handicap total rests comfortably atop the Division 1 Doubles standings.

30 Years of Service for Director Gordy Smith
by MBA President Jerry Wilson
Gordon Smith is in his 30th year of volunteer service to bowlers in the Madison area. He joined the Board of the Madison Bowling Association in 1978! He has been a director, vice-president, and twice served as the Association's President, after which he returned to being a director continuing his three decades of service.
Gordy has been a key planner and coordinator in the Hall of Fame Induction and Bowler Recognition banquets for many years. He always puts in many hours volunteering at the annual Madison USBC Bowling Association (BA) Championship Tournament, and was a key worker when Madison last hosted the State BA Tournament.
Congratulations on three decades of service to the Madison area bowling community!
Director Gordy Smith works the check in at the Regular Tournament at Spartan Bowl. You know it's done right if Gordy did it.
