Surprisingly, there is only one team that has been able to match or beat their entering average for the tournament - although the lanes are yielding some pretty good scores. Searching Through Joe D's Notebook By MBA Director Bob Eveland I recently had the privilege of searching through a small three ring notebook created by former Wisconsin State Journal bowling writer Joe Dommershausen. In this binder Joe meticulously recorded bowling achievements of MBA and MWBA members from the early 1900's through the latter 1970's. Here are some of the things I found interesting. The first 300 shot by an MBA member was by Adolph Stang on 10-25-1927. Twenty-six years later Bud Geier shot the 20th on 12-19-1953. Connie Schwoegler, generally given credit for creating the finger-tip grip, shot the 15th in the 1948 National All Star Tournament. Charles Carey shot Lark Lanes' first and only 300 in 1952. Charlie Nye, father of Jim, rolled his first 300 in 1978. Thirty years later he shot another in a league in Florida. Ed "Sarge" Easter shot a 299 in 1947. I have seen many references to the "Sarge Easter grip" but never realized he was an MBA member. M.F. Morgan had an opportunity for the first MBA 300 on 1-17-1923 but settled for 298. The first 300 by an MWBA member was by Jennie Hoverson Kelleher on 2-12-1930 at Plaza Lanes. The second MWBA 300 was shot forty-one years later by Maureen Richman. Richman, a phenomenal bowler, recorded eleven 700's from 1971-1974. Joe recorded some notable junior bowling accomplishments as well. Most of these names will be very recognizable to current Madison bowlers. Jim O'Connell rolled a 771 series in 1967. Marc McDowell matched it during the 78-79 season. Current Capital Times reporter Jeff Richgels gave us a preview of what was to come in his bowling career with a 747 set at Village Lanes in 1977. And in 1973, a sixteen year old Phil Caruso popped a 722 set at Burr Oaks Bowl. A small number of junior team scores were recorded as well. In October of 1979 Prein Sales rolled a then Madison Junior bowling record with a 3220 series at Stoughton's Viking Lanes. Team members and scores were Jeff Prein 696, Mitch Marks 680, Dave Buchwald 620, Marc McDowell 617 and Jon Ahlgrim 606. Their team game scores were a very consistent 1086-1059-1075. It's interesting to make comparisons between the present and the past. If you don't think the game of tenpins has changed - eighty-four 300 games had been recorded in the USBC MBA this season alone. Our association's first 300 game was recorded in 1927. The eighty-fourth came at Casino Lanes in 1974 by Bill Hosely. Forty-seven years to accumulate the same number of perfect games as our current clientele managed in a mere five months. McDowell Baker Challenge Village Lanes will be hosting Sunday shifts only at 12:30 and 3:30, starting on Feb. 17th and running thru March 9th. The Baker Challenge is a 3 person team tournament. Teams will bowl 9 games across 3 pairs of lanes. The cost is $54.00 per team. Call 222.7361 for details. ![]() I Need Your Stories!
